Cancer never affects just you.
On Monday, 7 February 2011, following a referral by the family doctor to the hospital in Poznan (Poland), swellings were found in the stomach and neck of 20-month-old Kuba Schut. He was very quickly diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, a cancer that forms in a specific type of nerve tissue. In consultation, a decision was taken to leave immediately for the Netherlands because the treatment options were better there.
“Cancer never affects just you” – as family and friends of Kuba, Ben and Marzena, we soon realised the harsh reality of this statement. The consequences are not confined to the body of dear little Kuba, they affect the whole family. A hasty move to the Netherlands, a long stay in hospital, uncertainty and unemployment – these are but a few examples that demonstrate the enormous consequences of Kuba’s illness.
Realising the family’s need, a number of people felt compelled to do something to help and established the Kuba Club.
Objective of the Kuba Club
The working group of the Kuba Club has set itself the objective of giving Kuba Schut and his parents as much support as possible during Kuba’s treatment for Neuroblastoma.
It will try to do this by:
· Assisting the parents financially with any treatment costs that are not covered by insurance.
· Providing the parents with financial and material support towards the cost of living during the treatment process to compensate for the reduced access to employment income, among other things.
· Giving psychological and spiritual support to Kuba and his parents by showing sympathy, offering a listening ear and praying.
· Doing anything else that may be connected with or conducive to the above in the broadest sense.
The Kuba Club working group believes that between € 40,000 and € 50,000 will be needed to cover the entire recovery process, including six months of treatment at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in America. (This excludes the primary treatment costs, which will be met by the health insurance provider). If there is any money left over at the end of the process, this will be put into the Kuba Club Foundation. The foundation can then use this to help other families in similar circumstances.
